WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army West Point hockey team held its team banquet on Monday night and Parker Gahagen was honored with the Henry "Hal" Beukema Award winner as the team's Most Valuable Player.
In addition to the awards given out, the team announced the captain for the 2016-17 season. Defenseman Ryan Nick will wear the "C" next season with Tyler Pham returning as the assistant captain.
Gahagen, a Buffalo, N.Y., native, led the nation in save percentage at .937 and recorded a career-high four shutouts, including three in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament. He recorded a career-high 14 victories between the pipes. He was the first non-forward to win the Beukema Award in eight years. The award honors Henry "Hal" Beukema who died in a plane crash in 1954 after attaining the rank of major. The team MVP award has been given out every year since 1955 and is voted on by team members.
Senior Joe Kozlak was selected as the Gunning Award winner for academic excellence. The award is named for Michael J. Gunning, a cadet letterman who died following a hit-and-run accident. It is presented in recognition of the cadet who displays the qualities of academic excellence, selfless dedication to his teammates, a trusted friend and a player who demonstrates true love for the game. The two-year captain finished his career with 138 games played and 69 total points and was in the lineup for all 38 games as a senior.
The Haggerty Award was shared by senior co-captain Christian Pomarico and classmate Shane Hearn. The award is named in honor of Paul Haggerty, a 1991 West Point graduate who worked his way up from junior varsity to the first line and later served as an Army assistant coach. He died suddenly during a workout early in his coaching career. Paul's son, Luke, presented the two seniors with the award. Pomarico skated in 37 games in his final year with the Black Knights. He posted nine points on a goal and eight assists. Hearn got into 36 games and recorded seven points on three goals and four helpers.
Rookie Taylor Maruya earned the Heinmiller Award, named in honor of John Heinmiller who was killed in a train accident following his freshman season. Maruya skated in 36-of-38 games for the Black Knights and reached double-digit in points with six goals and five assists. He had both of Army's shorthanded goals, including one against Holy Cross to complete the sweep of the Crusaders in the Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals.
The Maj. Tom Kennedy Award, named in memory of Major Tom Kennedy, a former Army player, Officer Representative and supporter of the Black Knights, was awarded to Josh Roberts. The award is presented to a player who exemplifies the great characteristics of Major Kennedy: a hard worker with a team-first attitude who will do anything to help the team. The winner of this prestigious award goes to the team's unsung contributor who goes above and beyond to help his teammates and personifies what made "TK" such a great person. Roberts was a fourth line player for the Black Knights all season and contributed seven points in 30 games. He had four goals and three assists.
Two members of the hockey team were honored with the Derek Hines Award. Senior defenseman Luke Jenkins and two-year manager Max Bosselaar. The award honors Hines, a scrappy and hard-nosed player who was a fan favorite and one of the most respected players in the locker room. It recognizes a person who has displayed an extraordinary amount of support to the Army hockey program and shares values that Derek did, cared more about giving than receiving and displayed great passion and love for the Army hockey family. Derek was killed in action in 2005. Jenkins was sidelined with a shoulder injury early in the season and saw action in one game. He contributed off the ice by helping breakdown film and keep time on ice. Bosselaar was also a huge help off the ice with his manager duties and always came to practice and games in support of his teammates.
