WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point softball team shut down Lehigh 1-0 in game two of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon after dropping game one to the Mountain Hawks in a three hour marathon.
Â
"Pitching and defense wins games, and our team knows that," said head coach Michelle DePolo. "Lehigh is a great hitting team, They can manufacture runs quickly. They have nine batters batting over .300, which is an incredible stat. Our defense had an outstanding showing today. I also thought all our pitchers have great performances and our defense was always ready behind them. The outfield earned their money tonight for sure."
The Black Knights (25-15, 7-3) did not allow a hit in the first inning and only one Mountain Hawk (26-10, 7-1) made it on base after being hit by a pitch. Army was able to load the bases in the bottom half of the first off a hit from Rashenskas, the first of the game, to left center. Emily Gray advanced her to second with a hit down the left field line before Gladys Esparza-Gallegos was walked. Lehigh was able to get out of the jam with a groundout from second to first.
Â
Lehigh made it into scoring position in the top of the second fueled by a double to right center. The Mountain Hawks scored on a single up the middle to go ahead 1-0. They then scored another run off a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. Lehigh tacked on two more in the top of the second before breaking the game open in the top of the fourth with three runs to take a 7-0 lead.
Â
Kristen McPeek had a huge double for the Black Knights in the bottom of the fourth to put Army in scoring position for the first time since the first inning. Lehigh was able to convert a quick out to prevent the Black Knights from getting a run on the board.
Â
In the home half of the fifth, Kasey McCravey made it on base off a fielder's choice to the pitcher. Rashenskas then beat out the thow to first and advanced McCravey to second. Emily Gray was walked which loaded the bases for Army. Lehigh was able to get out of the jam with a force out at third.
Â
The Mountain Hawks went ahead 8-0 when they doubled to center field then a hit to right and sent the runner home. Aja Brechtel stepped into the circle for the Black Knights after the run was scored with two outs on the board.
Â
Kristen McPeek notched a single and then Maddie Kim was walked. Ashley Yoo reached first and advanced the rest of an error by the pitcher. On the next play, Mae Wadyka knocked one to right which sent in Army's first run and snapped Christine Campbell's shutout. McCravey recorded a sacrifice fly sending pinch runner Hailey Megge home to bring the score to 8-2 still in favor of Lehigh.
Â
The Black Knights went three up, three down in the top of the seventh with all outs coming from Yoo's golden glove in center field. Gray reached with an infield single to the short stop. Designated player Caroline Smith singled up the middle to push Army into scoring position.
Â
After two and a half scoreless innings in game two, the Black Knights went up 1-0. McCravey notched an infield single to get on first. Then a double by Rashenskas deep to left center sent McCravey home.
Â
In the top of the sixth, the Mountain Hawks had the tying run on third and a dangerous Texas leaguer was dropping short, but Yoo made an astonishing diving catch to preserve Army's 1-0 lead.
Â
Renee Poirier was back in the circle for Army in the top of the seventh. She struck out the first batter then Esparza-Gallegos stopped a ball from going into the outfield and threw out the runner at first from her knees to give the Cadets their second out. The Mountain Hawks snuck a hit to left field to get a runner on base. The game ended with Rashenskas catching a line drive to clinch the victory.
Â
Kristen West picked up the win in today's second game to improve to 12-1 on the year, while Poirier earned her ninth save to clinch the No. 2 spot in Army's record book for career saves. She is inching closer to Ashley Christian's ('14) overall record of 12 saves.
Â
