Jesse Glenn Named Nissen-Emery Finalist

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point men's gymnastics senior Jesse Glenn, an all-around specialist, was named one of eight finalists for the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award in Wednesday's announced by the College Gymnastics Association (CGA).

The highest honor in collegiate gymnastics, the Nissen-Emery award has been presented annually since 1966 to an outstanding senior collegiate gymnast based on his achievement, sportsmanship and academic excellence.
"This is a tremendous honor for not only Jesse, but West Point as well as our program," stated Van Everen. "It is a talented group of candidates for this coveted award, and when you think about it, he encompasses all that it stands for."
Glenn will be challenged to become the first Black Knight to receive this award from fellow finalists in California's Kevin Wolting, Oklahoma's Kanji Oyama, Penn State's Trevor Howard, Nebraska's Ethan Lottman, Stanford's Brian Knott, Iowa's Jack Boyle and Logan Bradley of Illinois.
The field includes NCAA All-Americans, academic All-Americans, USA Gymnastics Collegiate All-Americans, national champions, scholar athletes, conference champions and National Team members.
Glenn has ranked among the national leaders throughout his four years at Army and holds school marks for high bar (15.40) and all-around (88.45), to include the top ten scores in each. He ranks second all-time on parallel bars (14.7) and is among the top eight on floor exercise (15.15), still rings (14.9) and vault (15.0).
He currently ranks No. 4 nationally on high bar with a 15.20 average, is 26thh on floor (14.95), 30th on pommel horse (14.533) and 12th in all-around (86.467).
Glenn has earned a plethora of awards in his career to include being crowned an ECAC champion six times, twice as an all-arounder and on high bar, along with vault and parallel bars. He will look to defend his titles in four events at this year's conference championships.Â
A five-time USAG All-American, Glenn earned honors in 2014 as an all-arounder as well as floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar.
He participated in two Winter Cup Challenges, along with earing a multitude of weekly honors to include ECAC Gymnast of the Week three times, ECAC Rookie of the Week, CGA Collegiate Division Gymnast of the Week twice, along with being selected seven times as the Army Athletic Associations' Athlete of the Week.
Glenn's highest weekly accolade came last month (Feb. 14) when he was selected as the NCAA National Gymnast of the Week following his performance at the All-Academy Championships. He is just the second Black Knight to earn this honor and first since 2007.
The seventh Black Knight to be a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award under head coach Doug Van Everen, Glenn joins former alum Kip Webb (2014), Hojan-Clark (2013), Troy Pazcoguin (2002), Scott Harris (2001), Steve Marshall (1996) and Imad Haque (1994).
This year's winner will be announced during the CGA Awards Banquet, which is being held at the Boat House at Confluence Park on Thursday, April 14th, 8 p.m. ET, in Columbus, Ohio, where the NCAA Championships are being hosted by Ohio State University.
The original Nissen Award was named in honor of George Nissen, a former NCAA champion, for his contributions to men's gymnastics. The award was re-named the Nissen-Emery Award in 1998 to honor Dr. Robert Emery, a Penn State graduate, who won the Nissen Award in 1969.
College gymnastics head coaches all across the nation are requested each year to submit nominations for the award. Gymnasts receiving a 50% vote of confidence from the head coaches are then placed on a final ballot and voted upon by the coaches, team captains, Honorary Lifetime Members, and conference judges. The award is inscribed with the motto: "The true champion seeks excellence physically, mentally, socially and morally."
