WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ten different Black Knights found the back of the net on Tuesday afternoon as the Army West Point women's lacrosse team collected a 20-8 victory over Howard in a nonconference matchup at Michie Stadium.
Army improves to 5-4 on the year after the win, while Howard slips to 0-6.
Sophomore Rachel Hornick finished with a season-best five points, with four goals and an assist, and was successful on all three of her free-position attempts. Junior Erin Jollota registered the first hat trick of her career after netting three goals and adding an assist.
Sophomore Amy Johnston was one of four Army players to end the game with two goals and also posted four assists and won four draws. Freshman Rachel Treweeke scored twice and tallied a team-high six draw controls, sophomore Kiersten Spencer netted a pair of markers, and freshman Amanda Roper finished with two goals, scoring for the first time in her career.
Freshman Kayla Rowley moved to 5-4 in net, following a three-save effort before being replaced by classmate Emily Turrini, who made two saves in the final 8:50.
Natia Warren led Howard with four goals and six draw controls, while goalkeeper Jasmine Wilson recorded eight saves.
"I think we played with confidence today," said head coach Kristen Waagbo. "We took some risks on the offensive end and we handled the ball well in transition, especially in the second half. We played loose today and a lot of people got on the field and contributed and we fed off of that energy."
Army scored six straight to begin the game, including two goals from Treweeke and the first career tally from freshman Brittany Rinaldi. Warren answered with back-to-back goals and brought Howard to a 6-2 deficit with 19:57 remaining in the opening half.
The Black Knights climbed out to an 11-2 lead after five consecutive goals, including free-position goals from Hornick and Spencer at the 18:21 and 9:34 points of the first half, respectively. Army netted five free-position goals in the opening period before going 4-of-5 in the second half to finish the game 9-of-14 on free-position attempts.
After controlling an eight-goal advantage, 12-4, at the half, the Black Knights added to their lead with two goals in the first 1:24 of the second frame, with Jollota and freshman Kelsea Krauss scoring to make the score 14-4.
The Bison got two back with markers from Asiyah Frank and Darieal Wimbley, but the hosts went on to outscore Howard, 6-2, over the game's final 19:36.
"This win is a nice reset button for us," Waagbo continued. "The Lafayette game (on Saturday) didn't go as great as we planned, especially after a tough second half. The ability to turn around just a few days later and get out there and correct some things we needed to work on gives us renewed energy as we head into a tough game against Bucknell this weekend."
Army returns to Patriot League action with a contest at Bucknell on Saturday, March 26 at 1 p.m.
