Halbrook Named Rookie of the Week
February 08, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Abby Halbrook of the Army West Point women's track and field team was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week for the second time this season for her performance that contributed to the team's thrilling 91-90 victory over service academy rival Navy this weekend.
"Abby is one of our most valuable performers, and that showed this weekend," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "She has range from 800m to 5000m. She is dependable and is a fierce competitor. She is just scratching the surface of what we think she is capable of accomplishing. Her future is bright."
This is the second-consecutive week that Army has earned Rookie of the Week honors and fourth overall. Cassie Mundekis was recognized for her record-setting performance in the 800-meter run last week, as well as on Dec. 7. Halbrook's first recognition came on Jan. 25.
Halbrook won the mile with a time of 5:03.35 in addition to finishing second in the 1000-meter run with a program-record time of 2:52.97, breaking the previous record of 2:52.99 which was set in 2013 by Jennifer Comfort. Â
Army returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 13, as the Black Knights split their squad for the second time in three weeks. A portion of the team will travel to Boston for BU's Valentine's Invitational while the rest of the team travels to New York City for the Millrose Games.
