Hilla Tabbed AAA Athlete of the Week
February 09, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Meagan Hilla of the Army West Point women's track and field team was named the Athlete of the Week by the Army Athletic Association following the Black Knights' thrilling 91-90 victory over service-academy rival Navy this weekend.
"I try to stay calm and act like it's just any other jump," said Hilla. "There was definitely a lot of pressure. We only traveled 27 girls while Navy had close to 40. We had a lot of girls doing multiple events."
Hilla won the high jump and broke the previous meet record that has stood since 1989. The Green Bay, Wis., native cleared the bar at 1.74 meters, while the previous meet record was 1.73 meters set by Army's Kim Seminiano. Additionally, Hilla's mark was the second-best in the high jump in program history, behind Seminiano's 1.79 meters which was also set in the 1989 season. Â
"I didn't know that I broke the record until our Officer In Charge came over and told me because it was previously held by a classmate of his," Hilla added. "I was just trying to get a height that I was reaching for in practice, and it turned out to be the record. Now that I have reached that mark, my goal is the school record at 1.79 meters."
The Black Knights return to action next Saturday, Feb. 13, as they split their squad for the second time in three weeks. A portion of the team will travel to Boston for BU's Valentine's Invitational while the rest of the team travels to New York City for the Millrose Games.
