Szekely, McCredie Headline All-Patriot League Honors

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After a second-place finish at the Patriot League Championships last weekend, the Army West Point men's swimming and diving team had seven Black Knights earn All-Patriot League recognition announced by the league Wednesday.

Chris Szekely and Brandon McCredie garnered first team accolades, and Josh Sembrano, Tom Ottman, Sean Regan, Matt McPheters and Jason Rodriguez were named to the second team.

"We are very proud of our athletes who earned a spot on the All-League team," said head coach Mickey Wender. "This is especially rewarding since Chris and Brandon were event winners at the meet. Chris capped off a great college career and we are excited to see him swim at Olympic trials. He taught Brandon a lot as one of his training partners and we are eager to see where Brandon's career will go."

Szekely and McCredie both led Army in individual points earned at the championship meet with 40.

Szekely, who hails from Doylestown, Pa., earned his third-straight first team honors, while being named to the second team his freshman year. The senior captured an NCAA B-Cut time of 43.96 in the 100 free during the preliminaries. He then won the finals in the same event after finishing in 44.91.Â

Szekely was part of all three relay teams that set new Academy standards including the 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay teams. At the conclusion of the meet, Szekely was named one of the most outstanding seniors due to the points he has amassed throughout his career at the championships.

McCredie, a freshman from Newtown, Pa., was tabbed to the first team for the first time in his career. He was named the Rookie of the Meet during the championships due to his 40 points earned for the Black Knights. He won the 50 free with an NCAA B-Cut and plebe record time of 20.10. McCredie was also part of the 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams that set new Academy standards.

Sembrano has been tabbed All-Patriot League Second Team for the second consecutive season. The sophomore who hails from Hasbrouck Heights, N.Y., clocked Academy records in both backstroke events and earned another during the 200 medley relay.

Sembrano was second in the finals of the 100 back. During the prelims, the sophomore clocked an Academy record time of 48.39. He was also second in the 200 back where he touched the wall in 1:46.16 to place second and capture another Academy record time. He tallied the third-most individual points for the Black Knights with 36.

Ottman was named to the second team for the first time in his career. The freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., was Army's top distance swimmer at the championship meet. He set two Academy records and two plebe records during the 1650 free with a mile time of 15:16.95 and a 1,000 free split of 9:09.19. He notched 30 individual points for the Cadets on the weekend.

Regan, who hails from Fort Washington, Pa., garnered second team honors for the first time in his career, and was on the first team as a freshman in 2014. He clocked a B-Cut time of 48.22 in the 100 fly after placing fifth. In the 200 fly, Regan placed third with an Academy record time of 1:46.28, which was also a B-Cut time. He competed for Army in the 200 IM and placed 12th with a time of 1:50.75. Regan totaled 35 individual points for Army at the meet.

McPheters is another first time honoree. The freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., was fourth in the 100 back after touching the wall in 49.31. McPheters finished seventh in the 200 back and recorded a time of 1:49.93 to be the Black Knights' second-best finisher. In the 200 IM, he had a 12th place time of 1:51.10 to amass 31 points, the second most among Army freshmen.
Rodriguez, a native from Irvine, Calif., garnered the all-league distinction for the first time in his career. The sophomore captured an NCAA B-Cut time in the 100 fly after placing third with a time of 47.94. He earned another B-Cut time in the 200 fly when he was fifth in 1:47.67. Â Rodriguez totaled 30 individual points for the Black Knights.

The Black Knights will be back in action this weekend for the ECAC Championships in Annapolis, Md.
