Army Women Jump Ahead of Boston at League Meet
February 19, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
DAY THREE RESULTS
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – With three days of the Patriot League Championships under its belt, the Army West Point women's swimming and diving team has moved up to second in the rankings with 361 points with Boston University trailing with 343.5 points.
"It was one of the best days that we've had for the women's program in a very long time," said head coach Mickey Wender. "They were able to overcome a 76.5 point deficit to Boston University to recapture second place. It was a great accomplishment for our team and I am so proud of each one of them. We were great across the board. The attitude and effort was tremendous and we put ourselves in a great position to accomplish our goals. Molly has been a model of consistency in the 100 fly. The plebes continue to impress and keep doing what they've been doing all year. It bodes well for the future."
Monica Sowinski went 1:49.27 in the 200 free to set a new Academy and plebe record. The freshman had set the standards earlier in the season and topped them in both today's preliminary and finals sessions.
In the 100 breast, Jess Ambrose set a new Academy and plebe standard with a fourth-place time of 1:03.00. She had broken the record during the preliminary round and again during the finals. Closely behind Ambrose was teammate Kara Wineinger who was also under the previous record time. She clocked a 1:03.25 to place fifth. Margaret Ireland (1:05.19) and Jess Fabrizio (1:05.25) finished 10th and 11th, respectively.
Jess Burkett led the night off with a 4:22.76 performance in the 400 IM to finish third. Sidney Evans was close behind after clocking a 4:23.70 to place sixth. Meaghan McGovern (4:26.07) and Kate Kinley (4:26.62) were 10th and 11th, while Sabrina Mortell finished 13th (4:27.06).
Molly Mucciarone earned an NCAA B-Cut time in the 100 fly with a second-place time of 54.31. Shannon Rogers placed sixth for Army after touching the wall in 55.39.
Cecelia Croman was the Black Knights' top finisher in the 100 back. She placed sixth with a time of 56.11 and Bailey Smith finished in 56.80 to place seventh. Kim Sembrano was 10th for Army with a time of 56.48.
The night ended with the 200 free relay in which Army placed third. Mucciarone, Kelly Hamilton, Smith and Sowinski touched the wall in 1:32.75.
