Women’s Basketball Tops Colgate for 10th Straight

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior Kelsey Minato scored 29 points and became the Academy's all-time scoring leader, as the Army West Point women's basketball team defeated Colgate, 78-55, in a Patriot League contest on Wednesday evening at Cotterell Court.
Army collects its 10th straight win to improve to 20-2 overall and 11-1 in the Patriot League, while Colgate falls to 4-18 and 2-10.
Minato shot 10-of-17 from the floor, including a 5-of-7 performance from deep, while also adding four assists. She passed Kevin Houston's (USMA '87) Academy record of 2,325 career points, raising her career total to 2,336 by the end of the game.
Senior Aimee Oertner tallied 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks, while Janae McNeal added eight points and six boards. Sophomores Destinee Morris and Aliyah Murray each finished with six points.
Josie Stockill led the way for Colgate with 29 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks, while Paige Kriftcher contributed 10 points and five boards.
Army got out to an early 8-3 advantage, which included consecutive lay-ins by Oertner to start the game. Stockill answered for Colgate with a personal 8-2 run that put the Raiders in front, 11-10, with 4:00 remaining in the opening period.
The Black Knights scored the game's next eight points, while holding the Raiders scoreless for the next 3:02, to grab an 18-11 lead by the 1:14 mark of the quarter. Murray netted four points during the run, McNeal and senior Jean Parker each chipped in a pair.
Colgate closed its gap to five points, 20-15, by the end of the first quarter, thanks to two-point contributions from Stockill and Ariel Etheridge.
Morris ended an 0-for-6 stretch from three-point range for the visitors with a triple that came 4:17 into the second quarter and gave the Black Knights a 30-20 advantage, for the first double-digit lead by either team.
Army maintained a cushion of at least seven points for the remainder of the half and Minato finished the frame by scoring all eight points of an 8-0 Black Knights' run during the final 1:37 of the period. Minato shot 3-of-3 down the stretch, including knocking in both of her three-point attempts.
Colgate outscored Army, 11-8, in the third period to trim its deficit to 14 points, 50-36, heading into the fourth quarter. Stockill scored eight of those 11 points for the Raiders, while adding three of her seven blocks during the frame.
Minato buried a three-pointer from the left corner with 27 seconds on the clock in the third quarter to reach 20 points for the evening and raise her career total to 2,327 points to pass Houston's mark.
The Black Knights began the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run, which gave them a 69-46 advantage with 5:09 remaining in the period. Minato highlighted the run with a four-point play at the 6:04 mark.
Army kept at least a 20-point advantage to close out the game.
Army is back at Christl Arena this weekend, when the Black Knights host American on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m.
