Casanova Captures AAA Athlete of The Week Honors

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman Cole Casanova of the Army West Point men's gymnastics team was named this week's Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after winning all-around and floor exercise as the No. 13 Black Knights snapped an eight-meet losing streak to No. 9 Air Force behind a season-high 422.65-417 home victory on Jan. 29.

Casanova, the first gymnast to earn AAA honors this season, recorded career highs in five of the six individual events starting with winning marks of 14.65 on floor exercise and 84.3 all-around in claiming medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career.

The plebe from Dallas, Texas, also recorded career marks on pommel horse (13.60), still rings (14.05), vault (14.4) and high bar (14.00). He finished in the top six in all of the individual event scoring earning fifth in the final four events – still rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

It is the second time in his career that Casanova earned weekly honors having been selected the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Rookie of the Week after earning third place in all-around at the West Pont Open (Jan. 15).

Casanova and his teammates were instrumental in helping Army set season highs in five of the six team events - floor exercise (72.55), pommel horse (70.35), still rings (69.05), parallel bars (67.45) and high bar (70.9). Â The Black Knights claimed wins in five of the six with the only event the Falcons won was still rings (71.85-69.05).

Air Force came into the meet ranked higher than Army in five events with the Black Knights listing No. 8 to the Falcons' 10th spot on high bar. Air Force ranked as high as No. 4 and 5 on pommel horse and vault, respectively.

The Black Knights, who leveled their season mark to 1-1, return to action Saturday, Feb. 6, when they take on No. 12 Navy in the annual Star Match and first conference (ECAC) meet of the season in Annapolis, Md. Â
