Hockey Continues Season at the Ledyard Classic

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team returns to the ice this weekend to start the second half of the 2016-17 season. Army takes on the Big Green on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Saturday's matchup is set to begin at 4:05 p.m. against either Colgate or #7 UMass -Lowell as the winners of the Friday night contests will face each other on Saturday.

THIS WEEK: RETURN TO THE LEDYARD CLASSIC
- The Army West Point hockey team returns to the ice this weekend to start the second half of the 2016-17 season.
- At the break, the Black Knights posted an impressive 9-6-1 overall record and .594 winning percentage.
- It was the first time in two decades that the Cadets had at least nine wins at the end of the first semester, and first with a full Division I schedule.
- In league play, the Black Knights are 9-4-0 posting a .692 success rate with the next-best team (Air Force) at .650.
- This will be the Cadets' second appearance at Dartmouth's Ledyard Classic, having played once before in 2008.
LAST TIME OUT: FOUR-POINT WEEKEND
- Army closed out the first half of the season in style with a weekend sweep of Holy Cross to gain four points in the league.
- This secured the top spot in AHA standings with 18 points. On Friday, the Black Knights came out strong at Tate Rink with four-straight goals.
- The Crusaders snuck in two as the clock ticked to zero, but the Cadets had secured the 4-2 win. The Black Knights built off their momentum from the night before and netted four-straight goals at the Hart Center on Saturday.
- Holy Cross recorded their lone goal of the night before Army posted four unanswered to win 8-1.
- Freshman Brendan Soucie notched a hat trick and totaled four points on the night.
- In all, 15 Cadets tallied at least one point on the weekend.
ARMY RECEIVING VOTES
- For the past two polls, the Army hockey team has received 10 votes in the USCHL.com National Poll.
- As a team, the Black Knights rank highly in multiple statistical categories amongst the nation's best.
- The team boasts the most shutouts in the country with four, due in part to goalie Parker Gahagen who is second in the nation with a .940 saves percentage, and is third in goals against with an average of 1.69.
- The Cadets have received votes six times this season.
FANTASTIC 44
- The Black Knights' rookies have been the real difference makers in the team's offensive production.
- The freshman class accounts for 44 points this season which is 14 more than the next-best class.
- The group has posted a team-leading 18 goals and 26 assists.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
- The hosting Big Green enter the weekend with a 4-5-2 record and a 1-3-2 mark in the ECAC.
- Dartmouth opened its season with a 3-2 win over then-ranked 11 Michigan.
- The team turned around and tied Cornell, 1-1, before blanking Colgate, 2-0.
- The Big Green split their series with Robert Morris with scores of 3-0 (L) and 5-2 (W).
- They concluded the first half of the season with a 5-1 victory over rival New Hampshire to break .500.
- The Army-Dartmouth series dates back to 1914 and the teams have met 60 times since.
- The Big Green lead the series 44-10-5 with the Black Knights' last win in the 1990-91 season when the Cadets topped Dartmouth, 4-3. In 2008-09, the Big Green squeaked past Army at the Ledyard Tournament with a 5-4 overtime win.
SCOUTING UMASS-LOWELL
- The seventh-ranked Riverhawks have posted an impressive 10-5-3 overall record.
- Some of UMass-Lowell's significant wins are over St. Lawrence (5-2), Nebraska-Omaha (4-2), Vermont (3-1, 4-2), Notre Dame (4-1) and Merrimack (4-1, 5-1).
- The Riverhawks received 689 points in the latest USCHL.com Poll to rank them seventh and are also seventh in the USA Today Poll.
- The teams +0.94 scoring margin ties Army 10th nationally. The Riverhawks boast a 19-6-0 all-time mark over the Black Knights.
- The teams haven't seen each other since the turn of the century as UMass-Lowell picked up a 4-0 shutout in 2001-02.
SCOUTING COLGATE
- Army has already seen the Raiders once this year.
- The teams fought to a 2-2 draw in the season opener with Conor Andrle posting the comeback goals, both on the power play.
- After finishing the game in a tie, Colgate now leads the series 36-18-7.
- This season, the Raiders have progressed to 4-9-4 with wins over Maine (5-3), #19 Yale (4-1) and Princeton (4-3).
