WEST POINT, N.Y. – Following a weekend sweep over Atlantic Hockey foe Holy Cross, the Army West Point hockey team gained attention not only around the league as they jumped back into first, but was recognized in this week's USCHO.com poll with 10 votes. This is the first time that the Black Knights have received double-digit votes this season.
Â
The Cadets picked up four points with two wins over the Crusaders last weekend. The Black Knights defeated Holy Cross 4-2 on Friday and continued their momentum into Saturday's game where they won 8-1.
Â
Army now boasts a record of 9-6-1 overall with a .594 winning percentage heading into the break. It is the first time in two decades that the Cadets have at least nine wins at the end of the first semester, and first with a full Division I schedule. In league play, the Black Knights are 9-4-0 posting a .692 success rate with the next-best team (Air Force) at .650.
The eight goals on Saturday were the most scored by Army since 2010. The stat sheet featured 14 players with at least a point. Freshman Brendan Soucie's performance stands out to most though as he posted his first career hat trick while adding an assist in the dominating victory. He was the first Cadet since 2013 to record a hat trick.
As a team, the Black Knights rank highly in multiple statistical categories amongst the nation's best. The team boasts the most shutouts in the country with four, this is due in part to goalie Parker Gahagen who is second in the nation for saves percentage (.940) and third in goals against (1.69).
Army was only three slots away from finding themselves in the top-20 rankings this week behind Cornell (49) and Michigan Tech (29). It's the first time this season that the Black Knights are the only team in the AHA to receive votes.
Â
The USCHO.com Poll consists of 50 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.
Â
The Black Knights are off until the end of December when they play in the Ledyard Classic hosted by Dartmouth.
