THIS WEEK: TWO-GAME WEEKEND
- The Cadets will play host to AIC on Friday night as they welcome back Eric Lang, a four-year assistant coach at Army, who took the head coaching job for the Yellow Jackets earlier this season.
- The Black Knights also welcome head coach Brian Riley's alma mater Brown to Tate Rink for the Saturday non-league contest.
- This weekend begins a three game home stand for the Black Knights with Saturday's matchup featuring a Teddy Bear Toss which helps support Toys for Tots.
- Fans are encouraged to bring stuffed animals that will be tossed onto the ice following the first period, all of which will be donated.
LAST WEEK: TIGERS TAKE TWO
- Army returns to action after an 0-2 weekend at RIT and a bye weekend. The Black Knights led 2-1 over the Tigers heading into the third period in the Friday night contest, but RIT netted five goals to clinch the game 6-2.
- Dominic Franco and Trevor Fidler tallied two power play goals for the Cadets. Fidler and Franco assisted on each other's goals, while Alex Wilkinson picked up two helpers for his first two points as a Black Knight.
- On Saturday night, the Tigers struck first with a goal 13:16 minutes into the game.
- Army answered back in the second period when Franco connected with Zach Evancho to tie things up.
- Neither team scored in the third which forced the game to go to overtime. It was the first overtime game the Cadets had played in since the first of the season on Oct. 1.
- It marked the longest stretch of games without extra time since the 2014-15 season.
- RIT went on to score 00:21 seconds in overtime on the Tigers' only shot to clinch the win and the weekend sweep.
FOUR-GAME STREAK
- Franco has continued to stand out on the Black Knights' stat sheet.
- The freshman has garnered at least one point in four consecutive games, the longest streak of any Cadet this season.
- Franco posted three points back on Nov. 11, when Army blanked the Griffins 3-0. On the next night, he added two points in the 5-2 win, and then recorded two in Friday's loss to RIT and one on Saturday as well.
- In the month of November, Franco totaled eight points.
MOVEMENT AROUND THE LEAGUE
- The Atlantic Hockey Association has seen a lot of teams vying for the top spot that Army has occupied for the first seven weeks of the season.
- The Tigers have reached 12 points to tie the Black Knights for first and are closely followed by AIC with 11.
- Other teams in double-digit points are Canisius and Mercyhurst who both boast 10. It is an important weekend of league hockey with only three points available to the Cadets.
- RIT will take on Niagara in a two-game series which could catapult it ahead of the field with a potential six points on the table.Â
SCOUTING AIC
- The Yellow Jackets have an unruly six ties this season, five of which are from league contests.
- Those along with their three wins have helped AIC chip away at the leaderboard with 11 points.
- The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Eric Lang who spent four seasons on the bench for Army as an assistant coach.
- AIC's signature wins from this season are over Mercyhurst (5-3), Holy Cross (4-2) and Niagara (3-1).
- The Yellow Jackets are coming off a two-game unbeaten streak after the win over the Purple Eagles and a 0-0 tie. Army went 2-3-0 against AIC last season.
SCOUTING BROWN
- Brown enters the weekend with a 1-8-0 overall record and a 1-5-0 mark in ECAC play. The team's lone win was over Colgate on Nov. 12.
- The Bears downed the Raiders 4-2 after falling to them the previous night by an identical score.
- Brown is hoping to snap a three-game losing streak with recent deficits to Clarkson (3-2), St. Lawrence (7-2) and Maine (5-1).
- The Black Knights have not seen a win over the Bears since 1991 as the Bears boast back-to-back wins and the teams fought to tie in the previous two meetings.
- Riley is an alumni of Brown and was a co-captain of the Bears' hockey team his senior season.
- Riley earned honorable mention All-Ivy League honors and was presented the Class of '36 Trophy for his outstanding contributions over his four-year career, and the Patrick Jones Trophy for having the most team spirit.
