Kim Earns D1A Rugby Player of the Month Accolades
November 03, 2016 | Men's Rugby
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior fly half Jon Kim of the Army West Point men's rugby team was named the D1A Rugby Player of the Month for October, the organization announced on Thursday.
Kim started in all four matches during October for the Black Knights and led the offensive attack with 61 points. The Gardena, Calif., native scored one try, 13 conversions and 10 penalty kicks in that span, including a varsity single-game record five PKs against Wheeling Jesuit on the 15th. He added a try and four conversions against the Cardinals for the second-most points in a single game by a Cadet since the fall 2014 season.
"Jon has been on a rapidly improving path this entire fall, and in October it's only accelerated," said head Coach Matt Sherman. "He gets a lot of accolades for his kicking, as he should, but he's also been instrumental in running our attack with ball in hand. For a player with relatively little experience, he has tremendous composure, sees the game very clearly, making sound decisions to guide our team. Furthermore, he's been a solid defender in our midfield defense."
Â
On the year, Kim has amassed 115 points on two tries, 30 conversions and 15 penalty kicks. 2016-17 has been a historic rookie campaign as he has surpassed varsity records for career and single-season points (115), single-season conversions (30), single-game conversions (seven vs. Stony Brook) and career and single-season penalty kicks (15).
Â
The Black Knights close out the fall season on Friday with a 7 p.m. kickoff against service academy rival Air Force at the Anderson Rugby Complex.
