Army Renews Rivalry with Air Force

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point hockey returns to Tate Rink Nov. 4-5 to host service academy rival Air Force. Friday night's game will begin at 7:05 p.m., while Saturday's is pushed back to 8:05 p.m.

THIS WEEK: THE RIVALRY CONTINUES
- After two weekends on the road, the Army West Point hockey team returns to Tate Rink.
- The Black Knights (3-2-1, 3-1-0 AHA) will face Air Force (3-2-1, 1-1-0 AHA) for a full on service academy rivalry weekend on the banks of the Hudson.
- Besides hockey taking on the Falcons, football and men's and women's rugby will be welcoming service academy rival Air Force.
- This season marks the first time in program history that the Black Knights and Falcons will face each other four times in the regular season.
- The first two games will be played Nov. 4-5. The game on Friday features a 7:05 p.m. puck drop, whereas Saturday's has been pushed back to 8:05 p.m. to give fans a chance to recoup from the day's festivities.
LAST WEEK: SECOND PERIOD MANIA
- The Black Knights split with Robert Morris last weekend. Army dropped the first game 2-1 to the Colonials with plebe Brendan Soucie scoring the lone goal in the second period with assists from cow Nick DeCenzo and yearling Ian Mansfield.
- Robert Morris answered back with two goals of its own, one on the power play and one at even strength, in the second.
- The next night, the Cadets struck first once again as plebe Zach Evancho found the back of the net in the second as firstie captain Ryan Nick and cow assistant captain Tyler Pham notched assists on the power play opportunity.
- Under a minute later, Evancho and yearling Trevor Fidler connected with Soucie who put home the back door pass for the game-winning goal.
- The Colonials fired back with 21 shots in the third, while scoring one power play goal.
- Firstie Parker Gahagen made 63 saves over the two games and culminated a .955 saves percentage.
LEAGUE SUCCESS
- The Army hockey team has seen early success in Atlantic Hockey contests.
- The Black Knights sit atop the AHA standings for the third-straight week with six points. Army has earned two shutout victories and one road win to earn those points. In statistical standings, the Cadets rank first in several categories.
- Army is first in the penalty kill with a .930 success rate and in special teams net at two-over.
- The Black Knights also boast the best saves percentage (.955) and goals against average (1.32).
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
- Soucie picked up Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week accolades this week after his two-goal performance against Robert Morris.
- The South Dennis, Mass., native notched his second career goal of the year Friday night with a bar-down shot to put the Cadets up 1-0.
- He then tallied the game winner on Saturday night, his second game-winning goal of the season.
- Soucie ranks tied for third in rookie scoring, and is knotted at fifth with a 1.0 goals per game average.
GOALIE OF THE MONTH
- Gahagen garnered Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Month honors for October after posting a league-leading 3-2-1, 3-1-0 AHA record.
- Gahagen, who hails from Buffalo, N.Y., is first in the league with a .956 saves percentage, which also ranks him fourth in the nation.
- He has tallied a league-leading goals against average of 0.76 in AHA contests. Gahagen is also the anchor of the team's successful penalty killing unit which boasts a .930 efficiency to rank eighth nationally.
- The senior has already picked up two shutouts this season, both against Atlantic Hockey foe Sacred Heart.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS
- Air Force enters the weekend receiving votes in the USCHO.com national poll and is well rested after having a bye weekend.
- The Falcons opened Atlantic Hockey play when Bentley came to Colorado.
- The teams split with the Falcons taking the Friday night game of the series 5-2 and Bentley winning Saturday's game by a convincing 6-1 score.
- Air Force's penalty kill ranks second in Atlantic Hockey and 11th in the nation at 89.3 percent (25 of 28). The Falcons opened the season by killing 16 straight penalties against Boston College and Ohio State, before Arizona State scored on two straight power plays on Oct. 16.
- Ben Kucera is tied for 20th in the nation with two power-play goals. Phil Boje is tied for 13th in the nation in points by a defenseman with six (2-4-6). His 1.00 points per game are fourth in the league.
- Shane Starrett ranks 16th in the nation in saves (160) and 18th in the nation in saves percentage (.925).
