Four in Double Digits Spark Army Win

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's basketball team registered its first victory of the season Tuesday night in its home opener against Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.).

The Black Knights saw four cadet-athletes reach double-digits with Luke Morrison's 14 points leading the way. Also hitting twin figures was Jordan Fox (12 points), Scott Mammel (11 points) and Tommy Funk (10 points). Fox and Funk both registered career highs, while Mammel matched his. Morrison came one point shy of equaling his best career effort.

Leading Army on the boards was rookie Matt Wilson, who posted his first career double-figure rebounding night. The first-year grabbed 10, including eight on the defensive glass. Mac Hoffman was a close second notching nine rebounds to go along with his six points.

Funk and Fox added five assists each, to lead all players, while John Miller registered his first two career blocks.

The home team then extended their lead to as much as 13 at the 15:35 mark of the opening period, but a feisty Mount Saint Mary team rallied to pull within 33-31 over the next 10 minutes. Another 9-0 run though pushed the Black Knights' edge back to double digits and Army never looked back.

- The Black Knights posted a season-best 91 points.
- For the game, Army shot 47.8 percent (33-of-69) from the floor and 38.5 percent (15-of-39) from long range. Both were season high marks.
- Army outrebounded its visitor 61-25, including a 20-5 edge on the offensive glass.
- The Black Knights racked up an impressive 23 assists on the night to just nine from the Knights.
- All 18 student-athletes that dressed for Army saw action in the game.
CAREER MARKS
- Ben Mammel, Gunther Klimes, Jason Houle, and Vincent McFadden all saw action in their first collegiate game.
- Klimes and Houle both earned two rebounds each, while Ben Mammel tallied a bucket.
TURNING POINT
- The Knights cut into what was an early Army lead with just five minutes to play before the break. The Black Knights, holding just a slim 33-31 edge, answered with a 9-0 run that created a 42-31 gap between the teams. Mount Saint Mary was never able to recover.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights started out hot from behind-the-arc, shooting their way to a 9-0 advantage in the games' opening minutes.
- Army extended the lead to as much as 16-3 at the 15:35 mark of the first half, but a 28-16 run over more than a 10-minute span pulled the Knights to within 33-31.
- The Black Knights quickly answered with a run of their own and eventually took a 50-36 edge into the break.
- Mount St. Mary again tried to rally early in the second half but a 14-1 spurt for the Cadets handed the home team a 70-43 advantage with 12:18 remaining in the game.
- Army was then able to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the rest of the contest to secure its first win of the season.
UP NEXT
- Army remains at home this weekend when it hosts the regional games of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. The Black Knight meet Arkansas State on Saturday at 6 p.m. before Chattanooga and Central Arkansas face off in the nightcap at 8:30 p.m. No matter the outcome of Saturday's game, Army will host either Chattanooga or Central Arkansas on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. All games are played at Christl Arena.
