Army Set to Host Sacred Heart, NHL Teams

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After starting the season with a 2-2 tie, the Army West Point hockey team will host Sacred Heart for its home opener on Friday, Oct. 7. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. from Tate Rink.

DETAILS
- Army will host Sacred Heart in Friday night games on back-to-back weekends at Tate Rink. Friday marks the Black Knights' home and Atlantic Hockey opener.
- Last year, the Cadets went 3-3-6 at Tate Rink during AHA games. Army went 1-0-1 against the Pioneers at home and were 1-1-0 on the road in 2015-16.
- Sacred Heart has not played a game yet this season, but hosted Ryerson for an exhibition contest last Sunday.
- The Pioneers won 7-4 and boasted a 29-16 shot advantage and tallied four goals in the final period. Justin Danforth of the Pioneers posted two goals and an assist to lead them offensively.
LAST WEEK: SEASON OPENER
- The Black Knights played in one of five games that occurred in the opening weekend of NCAA hockey. They were also the only AHA team to have a non-exhibition contest.
- Army opened the 2016-17 season on the road at Colgate with a 2-2 tie. The Raiders jumped ahead with a 2-0 lead during the second period, but Conor Andrle found the back of the net to cut Colgate's lead to one with assists from Ryan Nick and Clint Carlisle.
- Then, with three minutes remaining in the game, Tyler Pham connected with Andrle to post the tying goal which forced overtime.
- Parker Gahagen picked up the 13th tie of his career recording 28 saves.
- Army is now 2-2-1 against non-league teams over the past two seasons including opponents in the ECAC and Hockey East.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
- Sacred Heart closed-out the 2015-16 season with a 13-20-4 mark overall and was 10-15-3 in AHA contests.
- The Pioneers' season came to an end during the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament with a 2-1 series loss at Bentley.
- Danforth led the team with 41 points off 20 goals and 21 helpers and returns to the squad for his senior season. The Pioneers also return Evan Jasper (33 points) and Alec Butcher (26 points).
WELCOMING THE PROS
- Army West Point Athletics is welcoming the Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils for a pre-season exhibition contest on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Tate Rink at 7:30 p.m.
- Complimentary tickets for the event are limited and reserved for Cadets, Hockey season ticket holders, the West Point Community and invited guests of the National Hockey League teams. Tickets for the game will not be made available to the public.
PANTHERS OPEN PRACTICE
- For those interested in visiting West Point for this unique opportunity, the Panthers will have an open pregame practice on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Tate Rink beginning at 10:00 a.m.
- The team will skate for approximately 60 minutes and will be open to the public with no tickets necessary to attend. No autographs will take place following the open practice.
