Cadets Take on Minutemen on the Road

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After spending two weekends at Tate Rink, the Army West Point hockey team will hit the road Friday for a solo contest against Hockey East opponent Massachusetts.

DETAILS
- The Black Knights improved to 2-0-1 last weekend to increase their unbeaten streak to three.
- The Cadets downed Atlantic Hockey foe Sacred Heart 3-0 in the second straight shutout of the Pioneers, which gained them attention from the hockey community as Army received votes in the latest USCHO.com Poll.
- The Minutemen are 1-1-0 this season after splitting their season opener against Colorado College.
- Last Friday, UMass defeated the Tigers 3-0 then fell to them the following night 7-4. Army leads 18-12 in the all-time series over the Minutemen, which started back in 1948.
- The two institutions actually faced each other on 12 more occasions starting back in 1914 when Massachusetts-Amherst was referred to as the Massachusetts Agricultural College.
LAST WEEK: ANOTHER SHUTOUT
- The Black Knights notched their second straight shutout last Friday when they defeated Sacred Heart for the second consecutive weekend.
- Army netted three goals from Brendan Soucie, Dalton MacAfee and Conor Andrle in the win. For Andrle, it was his fourth goal in the first three games, while Soucie tallied his first collegiate goal during his first-career appearance.
- MacAfee found the net for the first time in an Army uniform with a wrister from the slot. He also proved that he could stop shots as much as make them when he made a diving save in the first period to preserve the Army shutout.
- Parker Gahagen stopped 25 shots to earn his second shutout of the season and did not give up a goal in the last two games against the Pioneers with 58 saves. He has not given up a goal in the last 149:22 minutes on ice.
ARMY RECEIVES VOTES IN USCHO POLL

- After shutting out Sacred Heart for the second week in a row, the Army West Point hockey team is receiving votes in this week's USCHO Division I Hockey Poll.
- The Black Knights are riding a three-game unbeaten streak, which is the best start to a season since 2006-07 when the Cadets posted a 5-0-1 record under present head coach Brian Riley.
- Other AHA opponents receiving votes in this week's poll are Air Force (31), Holy Cross (25) and RIT (1). The Cadets picked up five votes in the poll.
NON-LEAGUE SUCCESS
- Friday night's game featured four different goal scorers for the Black Knights and four players who tallied assists.
- Taylor Maruya and Clint Carlisle were the only Cadets who notched two-plus points after Maruya dished out three assists and Carlisle netted one and assisted on another.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
- The Black Knights boast a 2-2-1 record against non-league opponents from the last two seasons.
- In 2015-16, Army defeated #20 Merrimack (3-2) and Connecticut (2-0), while falling to #1 Boston College (5-1) and Massachusetts (2-1 (OT)).
- This year, the Cadets have tied Colgate (2-2) and have the Minutemen, Dartmouth, Brown and either Colgate or UMass-Lowell on the docket for their non-league opponents.
SCOUTING UMASS
- The Minutemen are 1-1-0 on the year after splitting their home opener with Colorado College.
- First-year head coach Greg Carvel secured his first win in last Friday's season opener.
- Freshmen forwards Jonny Lazarus and Griff Jeszka each tallied their first goals of their collegiate careers, with Lazarus scoring both Friday and Saturday night, and Jeszka getting on the scoresheet with an assist on Friday night and a goal on Saturday night.
- Defenseman Shane Bear also recorded his first collegiate point, assisting on a goal scored by Steven Lacobellis.
- Freshman goaltender Ryan Wischow started his first college game on Friday night, turning in a stellar 31-save shutout on the way to a 3-0 victory for UMass, and his first career shutout.
- Over the Division I history of Minutemen hockey, Wischow is the only netminder to record a shutout in his first career game.
