October 19, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Former Army West Point baseball standout Shane Kimbrough '89 launched into space this morning on his way to the International Space Station.
Kimbrough, joined by Sergey Ryzhikov and Andrey Borisenko of the Russian space agency, left from Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday. At the time of launch, the space station was flying 252 statute miles over the south Atlantic, east of Brazil.
Over the next two days, the Expedition 49 team will orbit the Earth 34 times before docking to the space station's Poisk module at 5:59 a.m. Friday. NASA Television coverage of docking will begin at 5:15 a.m. Hatches are scheduled to open about 8:35 a.m., with NASA TV coverage starting at 8 a.m.
The arrival of Kimbrough, Ryzhikov and Borisenko, returns the station's crew complement to six. The three join Expedition 49 Commander Anatoli Ivanishin of Russia, Flight Engineers Kate Rubins of NASA and Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. The Expedition 49 crew members will spend a little over four months conducting more than 250 science investigations in fields such as biology, Earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development.
Kimbrough was a three-year letterwinner for the Black Knights from 1987-89. In his first two seasons he served as a starting pitcher before being moved to the closer role. By his senior year he was named a team captain and led the squad with 15 appearances, earning five saves which still remains 10th all-time on Army's single-season list.
