STORYLINES
Army saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end on Jan. 2 after falling to Bucknell, 79-69, in its first Patriot League away game of the year. The Black Knights are back on the road this week to face a Lafayette team lost at Loyola on a last-second lay-up in its last outing.
Senior Kelsey Minato scored a season-best 35 points at Bucknell (her most since scoring 37 at Lafayette last season) and raised her career point total to 2,096 to pass 1999 Holy Cross graduate Amy O'Brien (2,077) for second on the Patriot League's career scoring list. Minato also set a career standard with 16 field goals opposite the Bison. Also making waves in the record books was senior Aimee Oertner, who recorded a career-high-tying six blocks to become Army's career blocked shots leader with 224, passing Erin Anthony's (USMA '11) previous record of 222.
THE ARMY-LAFAYETTE SERIES
Army holds a 34-24 all-time advantage versus Lafayette in a series that dates back to the 1983-84 campaign. The Black Knights and the Leopards split a pair of meetings last year, with each team winning at home.
ARMY WEST POINT (10-2, 1-1 PATRIOT LEAGUE) NOTES
• Minato led three Black Knights who reached double figures, as Oertner and sophomore Janae McNeal each tallied 10 points.
• Senior Jean Parker finished two points shy of a double-double, as she posted eight points and a career-best 10 rebounds.
• Minato leads the Patriot League and ranks fifth nationally with a scoring average of 23.6 points per game, while Parker stands second in the conference, and ninth nationally in three-point percentage (49 percent – 24-for-49).
• The Black Knights trailed by 13 points in the third quarter against Bucknell to mark their largest deficit of the year. Army was able to trim its deficit to two points early in the fourth quarter, but never tied the game.
LAFAYETTE (2-10, 0-2 PATRIOT LEAGUE) NOTES
• Lafayette dropped to 0-2 to begin Patriot League play, falling at Loyola, 66-65, on a buzzer-beating lay-up on Jan. 2.
• Junior Harriet Ottewill-Soulsby led three double-digit scorers for the Leopards, netting 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
• Senior Jamie O'Hare tallied 17 points and four assists, while junior Ashley Lutz finished with 15 points and a game-high eight boards.
• O'Hare paces the Leopards with 16.1 points per game this season, while Lutz is the team's leader with 7.2 rebounds per contest.
DIALED IN FROM DOWNTOWN
Army has continued to shoot the three-pointer well this year after finishing each of the last three seasons atop the Patriot League in three-point shooting percentage (2012-13: 33.3 // 2013-14: 37.2 // 2014-15: 35.4). Through 12 contests this season, the Black Knights have made 41.2 percent of their three-point attempts and currently stand first in the Patriot League and fifth among the nation's Division I programs in the category.
Army's long-range success is due, in large part, to two of the most-accurate three-point shooters in Academy history, in Minato and Parker. Minato paces the team with 36 triples and stands fourth in the conference with a 43.9 percentage from deep. Parker has converted 24 shots from beyond the arc and ranks second in the league, and ninth nationally, at 49.0 percent. Minato is Army's career leader in three-pointers, with 257, while Parker ranks fifth in team history with 115. Army's three-pointers currently represent 30.7 percent of its total offense this season.
WINNING WAYS
The Army Women's Basketball Class of 2015 holds the program record with the most victories over a four-year span, with an 84-41 overall record. The Class of 2016 has a chance to surpass last year's seniors for the most wins in team history and currently owns an 81-27 record over its first three-plus seasons. The Black Knights' current senior class includes Minato, Oertner, Parker, Brianna Johnson and Brigette Ocran.
