January 11, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sabrina Mortell of the Army West Point women's swimming and diving team has been named this week's Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after winning all of her events this past weekend.
The sophomore distance swimmer placed first in four events for the Black Knights in back-to-back dual-meets with Lehigh and Bucknell. Mortell tallied 36 critical points which helped lead Army to defeat the Mountain Hawks and Bison.
Against Lehigh, the Mechanicsburg, Pa., native, out-touched the competition in the 1,000 free by six seconds with a time of 10:25.19. Later in the meet she won the 500 free (5:05.20) by just over three seconds.
The next day against Bucknell, Mortell pulled out two more first-place finishes. She clocked a 10:26.29 in the 1,000 free and a 5:05.79 in the 500 free.
Army's win over the Bison was the fifth in the all-time series marking the first time in over 20 seasons that a Black Knight team accomplished that feat.
The Black Knights improved to 6-1 on the season and return to action Saturday, Jan. 16 when they face Colgate and Lafayette in Hamilton, N.Y.
