WEST POINT, N.Y. – Three former Army football players will play a role in the National Football League this season.
Alejandro Villanueva is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Josh McNary is on the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad and Collin Mooney was placed on injured reserve by the Atlanta Falcons.
Villanueva, a 2010 West Point graduate, made the Steelers' 53-man roster as an offensive linemen. Villaneuva, listed at 6-foot, 9-inches and 320 pounds is relatively new to the offensive line. In 2014, he was invited to the Philadelphia Eagles camp as a defensive lineman but did not make the roster. He played tight end during his final season at Army.
After graduating from West Point, Villanueva served in the Infantry branch of the U.S. Army and served three tours as an Army Ranger.
The Steelers open the 2015 season Thursday, Sept. 10 at the New England Patriots.
Mooney, a fullback, is a 2009 West Point graduate and is in his first season with the Falcons, who placed the 5-foot, 10-inch 238-pounder on the injured reserve list. Mooney hauled in a 60-yard reception against the Jets and scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the Falcons' final preseason game against Baltimore.
Mooney played for two seasons with the Tennessee Titans with five rushes and six receptions in 2012 and 2013.
He served in the Field Artillery branch of the U.S. Army after rushing for a school record 1,339 yards during his senior campaign.
The Falcons open their 2015 schedule Monday at home against the Philadelphia Eagles.
McNary, Army's all-time leader in quarterback sacks, has returned to the Colts' on their practice squad. McNary played in 20 games with the Colts over two seasons. His contact expired at the end of the 2014 campaign and the Colts signed him to the practice squad in early September.
McNary, a 2011 graduate who played on the 2010 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl squad, registered 42 tackles during the 2013 and 2014 season. He posted 26 primary tackles and 16 assisted tackles with half of a quarterback sack.
McNary began his professional career as a practice squad player in 2013 and was signed to the active roster on Nov. 26, 2013.
The Colts will kick-off the 2015 season Sept. 13 at the Buffalo Bills.
