Army West Point Athletics

2015 Mission First Available Now
September 03, 2015 | Athletics
The following introduction, written by Army West Point Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan, explains the cultivation and execution of creating Mission First. Stories will be published online on a weekly basis beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Our family arrived at West Point nearly five years ago, in the winter of 2011, and each day we are constantly reminded of those who came before. One of the great items I have seen in my time is "much of the history we teach was made by people we taught." You see that often in media guides and some brochures around post. While the statement isn't attributable, it certainly is humbling.
Every day, something happens at West Point that doesn't take place anywhere else in the country. Being part of this special community is a privilege I do not take for granted, and we are continuously working to improve the experience for everyone connected to West Point. Our coaches and support staff share the same goal of keeping the people a priority, because in the end, that is what makes this great Army so special.
Success continued for us this past year as we made a significant change to our appearance as a department. We continued to honor the history and tradition of the Academy and its athletic programs with a new primary mark that you will see in our tremendous facilities.
We also added men's and women's rugby under the athletic department and we now proudly offer 28 varsity sports. Both rugby teams won championships last season, as did the gymnastics team, providing another example of how we ensure we are always in alignment with the mission of the Academy: to educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets.
In this edition of "Mission First," we will share 16 stories of those committed to similar values as our cadets. A few are graduates and a few are co-workers but they all share the common bond of West Point. Each of those profiled know our goals can be accomplished with trust and passion for this great place.
For this edition, we strove to identify cadets, staff members, graduates and friends of the Academy who have placed the mission before all else.
In our role as athletics administrators, we constantly preach the concept of "Team." Selfish thoughts or actions don't lead to a successful environment. Teams that excel are filled with players and coaches that prioritize the name on the front of the jersey, not personal goals or agendas. Everyone has a role and purpose on a team.
"Duty. Honor. Country." has impacted the lives of so many who have passed through these hallowed grounds of West Point. We hope that our third edition of "Mission First" helps to promote that.
We hope you enjoy reading these very special accounts and learning about what makes West Point so special.
