Holder Named Senior CLASS Award Candidate
September 03, 2015 | Women's Soccer
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Army West Point women's soccer player Katie Holder was one of 30 NCAA women's soccer student-athletes named as a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate soccer.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Holder, who was the lone women's representative from the Patriot League, was a preseason all-conference selection and has one goal and two assists to her credit through four games this year. Last year, Holder was a First Team All-Patriot League pick after leading the team with six goals and 12 points. To this point in her career, Holder has played in 59 matches, including 36 starts. She has 13 goals and seven career assists, and eight of her 13 goals have been game-winning tallies.
Holder was selected as a 2015 team co-captain and, over the summer, she served as Queen of Beast during cadet basic training, also known as "Beast Barracks." In her position, Holder commanded the cadet cadre in charge of the new cadets during the first phase of summer training. Holder currently holds the 3rd Regimental Commander position as part of the Cadet Chain of Command for the 2015-16 academic year.
The Stillwater, Minn., native, who has experience as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, comes from a military family where both parents, Rob and Ann Holder, are 1989 USMA graduates. Her brother, Will, graduated from the Academy in 2013.
Holder has also excelled in the classroom as a Mechanical Engineering major with a 3.581 cumulative grade-point average. Holder has earned a number of academic honors, including being named to the 2014 Academic All-Patriot League team, the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District 1 Team. She is a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Of the 60 total candidates in men's and women's soccer, 25 have grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher, four are returning All-Americans and eight are on the preseason watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, which recognizes the top player in collegiate soccer. Outside of academics and athletics, all candidates also have been consistently involved in community service on their campus or in their communities.
Each of the two candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2015 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
