Wake Forest Visits Michie Stadium Saturday
September 17, 2015 | Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point football team returns home to host Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:04 p.m. and the game will be televised live by CBS Sports Network.
On the call for the game will be Ben Holden (play-by-play), Jay Feely (color analyst) and John Schriffen (sideline). Saturday's game can also be heard on the radio via the Army Sports Network.
"I think we are making some real improvements," head coach Jeff Monken said at his weekly press conference. "To have as many young guys in the game as we had, it is promising to see the improvements they are making and I think we have improved from week one to week two in a lot of areas. Other places we may have digressed a little bit, but I am excited about a lot of the things I am seeing despite having to suffer through a loss. I was really proud of the effort of our guys. Where we are from an execution standpoint and from an effort standpoint I think there are a lot of improvements compared to last year. Unfortunately, it hasn't equaled up to two victories and I hoped it would have, but our guys are a great group of kids and they recognize the areas where we need to improve and they are willing to put in the work."
The Black Knights are searching for their first win of the 2015 campaign after falling by a total of seven points in their first two contests. Army lost to Fordham 37-35 in its season opener, before losing on the road to UConn, 22-17, last week.
Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw has rushed for at least 100 yards in both games this season, and threw for 106 yards in the Fordham game.
A.J. Schurr made his first appearance of the season at quarterback late in the game at UConn. He connected with Joe Walker on a 71-yard touchdown pass, which was the longest TD pass of his career and the longest reception of Walker's career.
The Army defense has forced a turnover on the opposition's first possession in both games this season. Against Fordham, the Black Knights turned the miscue into seven points and at Daniel Grochowski drilled a 41-yard field goal against the Huskies.
Linebacker Andrew King has recovered a fumble in both games this season and against UConn he recorded a career-high three sacks. It was the first time an Army player registered three quarterback sacks since Josh McNary collected four at Temple in 2009.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Army and Wake Forest are meeting for the 15th time in a series that began in 1945. Army and Fordham played last season in Winston Salem, N.C., and the Demon Deacons managed to come away with a 24-21 victory. The visitors have won the last eight meetings dating back to 1990, and lead the series 10-4, but Army is 4-4 in games played at Michie Stadium.
Last year, Army rushed for more than 340 yards, but Wake Forest came from behind and scored the final 10 points to win the game. Angel Santiago ran for 123 yards, Larry Dixon had 92 on the ground and Joe Walker threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Moss on a halfback option pass.
Wake Forest saw John Wolford throw for 238 yards and two touchdowns. He was 25-for-35 through the air and 64 of those yards were to Matt James on seven catches. Isaiah Robinson was the leader on the ground with 60 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.
SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
Wake Forest stands at 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play with a win against Elon and a loss to Syracuse. The Demon Deacons are averaging 29 points per game and allowing 16.5.
Wake Forest ranks ninth in the country in net punting, fourth in time of possession at 36:33 and has allowed just 21 first downs.
Sophomore quarterback John Wolford has connected on 50-of-72 passes for 696 yards. He has thrown four touchdowns and three interceptions and ran for two scores. K.J. Brent has been his favorite target with 11 catches for 142 yards and a score.
Isiah Robinson is the team's top rusher with 73 yards on 21 carries. Wake Forest averages 124.5 yards per game on the ground and allows 100.0.
Brandon Chubb is the squad's top tackler with 13 stops and owns one of the team's 10 tackles for loss.
