WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team returns to action with a pair of home matches this weekend at Clinton Field. The Black Knights welcome a pair of first-time opponents to West Point in Youngstown State and Harvard.
Youngstown State kicks off the weekend on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Penguins own a 2-0 record so far in 2015 with consecutive 1-0 road victories at VMI and Longwood. In the victory over the Lancers, rookie Madison Hughes tallied her first goal, while senior Karlee Kline notched the decisive goal against the Keydets. Junior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery has recorded a pair of clean sheets for Youngstown State, but has only been tasked with making one save in the process.
Last year, Youngstown State compiled a 7-9-2 overall record and a 3-4-1 Horizon League mark. The Penguins have 18 letterwinners returning from last-year's squad, including seniors Katie Hohmann, Kline and Macey Riese. All-Horizon League Second-Team selection Kathy Baquero, who led the team in scoring with six goals and 13 total points, is back for her junior campaign.
The defending Ivy League Champion, Harvard, opens its 2015 schedule against the Black Knights on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Harvard finished the 2014 campaign with an 11-5-2 record, including a 5-1-1 mark in conference play and are paced by junior forward Margaret Purce, who was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list. Purce was named to the All-Mid-Atlantic, All-New England, and All-Ivy League first teams in 2014 and also competed on the U.S. U-20 National team. She led Harvard in goals and points in each of her two seasons in Crimson, including a 10-goal performance in 2014.
Army split its two matches on opening weekend with a 4-2 victory over Sacred Heart and a 2-0 setback on the road against Delaware. Four different Black Knights scored in the win over the Pioneers, including rookies Kayleigh Stallings and Brigid Tracy, while senior Katie Holder put in the game winner and assisted on classmate Bailey Widman's tally to open the scoring. Sophomore Clare Shea added a pair of assists in the triumph.
New for 2015 is the addition of the Patriot League Network, which will serve as the home for all Army West Point home women's soccer online broadcasts. The matches against Youngstown State and Harvard will be shown on the Patriot League Network, free of charge, with Zack Daly on the call.
