PL Announces 25th Anniversary Men's Track Team

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Patriot League Men's Track and Field 25th Anniversary Team was announced on Friday, and the school that has dominated the sport over the League's history led the way as Army West Point placed nine honorees on the squad.

Navy followed with five selections, while Bucknell had four. Seven different schools were represented on the 25th Anniversary Team.

The team members are listed below by school, with seasons for the athlete's years of competition in the Patriot League. Each school that participates in men's track and field selected 25 players in the voting for the 25th Anniversary Team, and could not vote for its own student-athletes.

The Anniversary Team selections have excelled both in the Patriot League and nationally. The group has combined for 31 All-America selections and 33 League Athlete of the Meet awards, with each of the 25 honorees achieving at least one of the two significant honors and 12 former student-athletes reaching both accomplishments. The honorees have also combined for 128 individual titles at the Patriot League Indoor and Outdoor Championships.

Army West Point's Dan Browne, Mike Bernstein and Jason Stewart and Colgate's Ray Appenheimer made the 25th Anniversary Team for track and field after also making the squad for cross country announced last week.

The Patriot League is releasing 25th Anniversary Teams throughout the month of August for each sport that has been sponsored by the League since it became an all-sport conference beginning in the 1990-91 season. In addition to the 25th Anniversary Teams, coverage throughout the 2015-16 season will focus on former student-athletes and top stories in the history of the Patriot League.

Patriot League Men's Track and Field 25th Anniversary Team

Ray Appenheimer, Colgate (1991-94) – A competitor in the first four seasons of the Patriot League, Appenheimer remains one of the most decorated track and field athletes in League history. He recorded three All-America honors, including the best finish for a Patriot Leaguer at the NCAA Indoor Championship with a runner-up showing in the 3,000-meter run in 1993. Appenheimer also finished in 10th place in the 5,000-meter run at both the 1993 NCAA Outdoor Championship and 1994 NCAA Indoor Championship to earn All-America honors. Appenheimer was named Patriot League Indoor Athlete of the Meet in both 1993 and 1994, and four of his five League titles came in indoor competition with wins in the 3,000-meter in 1992, 1,000-meter and mile in 1993 and 5,000-meter in 1994.

Robert Arent, Bucknell (2009-12) – Arent earned the Patriot League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet award in both 2010 and 2011 and completed his career with nine individual League titles. He won three consecutive titles from 2010-12 in both the indoor 400-meter and outdoor 400-meter hurdles, and won the outdoor 400-meter title in 2010 and 2011 and the outdoor 110-meter hurdles in 2012.

Mike Bernstein, Army West Point (1992-95) – Bernstein was named the Patriot League Indoor Athlete of the Meet as a senior in 1995, then went on to win All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship with a 10th-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. All four of his individual titles at the Patriot League Championships also came in his senior season as he claimed the mile and 3,000-meter run in the indoor season and won the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter in the outdoor season.

Dan Browne, Army West Point (1994-97) – Browne was a two-time All-American in the outdoor season with a pair of impressive showings at the NCAA Championship by placing sixth in the 10,000-meter race in 1996 and fourth as a senior in 1997. The Patriot League All-Decade Team member won seven individual titles at the League Championships, including victories in the outdoor 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter as both a junior and senior as well as two wins in the indoor mile and one in the indoor 5,000-meter.

Adam Burke, Army West Point (2001-04) – Burke earned All-America honors in 2003 when he finished in ninth place in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. He won the javelin at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in consecutive seasons in 2003 and 2004.

Sean Duffy, American (2002-05) – Duffy had great success across the board as he finished his career as a two-time Patriot League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet, two-time All-American and as the holder of nine individual titles from Patriot League championships. He earned the Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet honors as a junior and senior in 2004 and 2005. In his senior season Duffy matched the best finish for a Patriot Leaguer at the NCAA Outdoor Championship with a third-place showing in the 1,500-meter run. He was also part of American's distance medley relay squad which earned Indoor All-America status with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championship in 2003. Duffy won the 1,500-meter run at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in all four of his seasons, and is also a two-time winner of the 800-meter at both the Indoor and Outdoor Championship.

Zack Duncavage, Navy (2011-14) – Duncavage dominated throwing events in his time at the Patriot League. He earned the Patriot League Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet award in 2013 and the Outdoor honor in 2014, and earned All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the discus in both 2012 and 2013. He was a three-time discus winner at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, and also won the shot put at both the indoor and outdoor championship as a senior and the indoor weight throw as a junior.

Dustin Emrani, American (2004-07) – Emrani concluded a fine career by placing 12th in the 800-meter run at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championship to earn All-America status. He also won five individual titles at Patriot League championships in the 800-meter, with three in the indoor competition and two in the outdoor season.

Brian Gebhardt, Army West Point (1997-00) – Gebhardt was dominant in throwing events, winning the hammer at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship as a junior and senior and doing the same in the weight throw at the Indoor Championship. He earned All-America status in the indoor season in 2000 with a 13th-place finish in the weight throw, and later that year earned the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet award at the outdoor championship.

Gerald Ingalls, Army West Point (1993-96) – Ingalls earned both All-America honors and a Patriot League Athlete of the Meet award as a senior to cap a career that saw him win five individual titles at the Patriot League Championship. Ingalls earned the All-America distinction during the indoor season with a 13th-place finish in the weight throw at the 1996 NCAA Championship, then went on to win the Patriot League Outdoor Championship Athlete of the Meet honor. He was a three-time champion in the hammer throw at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship and a two-time champion in the weight throw at the indoor championship.

Paul Harris, Navy (2004-07) – Harris won four different events for his five League titles, as he was a two-time indoor champion in the 500-meters while also winning the 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter at the outdoor championship. Harris was named Patriot League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet in 2007 when he won the 200 and 400-meter races and Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet in 2006 when he set a meet record that still stands in the 500-meter. Harris competed at the NCAA Indoor Championship in 2007 and placed sixth in the 800-meter run for his All-America honor.

Ron Hess, Bucknell (1997-00) – Hess had outstanding performances at Patriot League championships throughout his career, winning the Athlete of the Meet in both the indoor and outdoor season in 1999 before a Co-Track Athlete of the Meet award in the outdoor competition in 2000. He won six individual League titles, including three straight in the indoor mile from 1998-00 and two in the outdoor 800-meter in 1999-00.

Leonard Joseph, Bucknell (2010-13) – Joseph was one of the top throwers in Patriot League history as he won an Athlete of the Meet award, two All-America honors and four individual League titles in his career. He won the Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet as a senior in 2013, and was an Outdoor All-American in the hammer in both 2012 and 2013. He won the hammer throw at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in his final three seasons and also claimed the indoor weight throw as a junior.

Greg Keller, Navy (1993) – Keller's lone season in the Patriot League was a memorable one as he was named the Co-Outdoor Athlete of the Meet as well as an Indoor All-American in 1993. He placed fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championship in the 3,000-meter run to earn the All-America honor, and won the steeplechase at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship with a meet record time that still holds more than 20 years later.

Sean O'Brien, American (2002-03) – O'Brien was a three-time All-American in his two seasons in the Patriot League, earning the distinction in the outdoor campaign in both 2002 and 2003 as an individual. He finished 11th in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Championship in 2002, then placed fourth in the event in 2003. He also ran on American's distance medley relay squad which earned All-America status with an eight-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championship in 2003. O'Brien won three individual titles at Patriot League championships, include the mile in back-to-back seasons at the indoor competition.

Cleveland McCray, Lehigh (1991-93) – McCray won a pair of Outdoor Athlete of the Meet honors and seven individual titles in his three seasons in the Patriot League. He won the Athlete of the Meet honors in 1991 and 1993 (Co), and captured five titles in the outdoor competition with a pair of wins in the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles as well as a victory in the triple jump. McCray also won the indoor 55-meter hurdles title consecutively in 1991 and 1992.

John Mentzner, Navy (1995-98) – Mentzner won three All-America honors over his final two seasons. It started with an eighth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championship as a junior in 1997, and Mentzer then earned Outdoor All-America honors in both 1997 and 1998 in the 10,000-meter run with ninth and 13th-place finishes, respectively.

Rich Peters, Boston University (2014-15) – Peters had an outstanding two seasons in the Patriot League, particularly as a junior in 2014 when he won the Indoor Athlete of the Meet honor and was named All-American at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship. He finished fourth at the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship for the best showing by a Patriot Leaguer in more than 20 years. Peters won four individual Patriot League titles in his two seasons, claiming the mile and 1,000-meter at the 2014 Indoor Championship and the 1,500-meter at the Outdoor Championship in both of his seasons.

Noel Powell, Bucknell (2000-03) – Powell won the Patriot League Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet award in 2002 as part of an impressive career that saw him win seven individual League titles. Powell earned titles on the track and in jumping events, as he was a two-time Patriot League outdoor champion in the 100-meter in 2002-03 and also won the outdoor 200-meter in 2002 while also claiming both the indoor and outdoor long jump titles in 2002 and again in 2003.

Tyrone Russell, Colgate (2000-03) – Russell excelled in competition at Patriot League championships with three Athlete of the Meet awards and nine individual League titles in his career. He won the Patriot League Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet award in both 2002 and 2003, and added an Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet honor in his final season. All of Russell's individual titles came in the 200-meter and 400-meter, as he won the former twice in both the indoor and outdoor championships and the latter three times in the outdoor season and twice in the indoor competition.

Clay Schwabe, Army West Point (1998-01) – Schwabe's standout career was highlighted by a memorable senior season in 2001 when he was named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor championship and went on to earn All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Championship with an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Schwabe also won Patriot League individual titles that season in the indoor 1,000-meter run and outdoor 800-meter and 1,500-meter run, which he repeated in after also winning as a junior.

Jay Stell, Navy (2013-present) – Stell heads into his senior season with an already impressive run of accomplishments in the javelin. He has won the event at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in all three of his seasons, and placed third at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in 2014 to match the highest NCAA finish for any Patriot Leaguer in the outdoor competition and earn All-America honors.

Jason Stewart, Army West Point (1991-94) – Stewart earned a pair of All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run his senior season with impressive showings, coming in third place at the NCAA Outdoor Championship and fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championship. The Patriot League All-Decade Team member won three individual titles at the League Championships, including back-to-back in the outdoor 1,500-meter run in 1992 and 1993.

Domonick Sylve, Army West Point (2008-11) – Sylve concluded his career by placing 11th in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championship to earn All-America status. He was also a two-time Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet, earning the honor in the outdoor season in 2009 and in indoor competition in 2011. Sylve won seven titles at Patriot League championships, winning the 110-meter hurdles in the outdoor season all four of his years and also claiming a pair of 60-meter hurdle titles in indoor competition.

Jeff Weaver, Army West Point (2001-04) – Weaver is perhaps the most accomplished competitor at the Patriot League championships as a four-time Athlete of the Meet and a 10-time event winner. He earned the Field Athlete of the Meet at the indoor competition in three straight seasons from 2002-04, then concluded his career as the Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet in 2004. Weaver excelled in the triple jump as a three-time winner at the indoor championship and two-time in the outdoor event, and also won the high jump twice in the outdoor season and once in indoor and the long jump once at both events. Weaver won five of his 10 titles as a senior in 2004.

He won three consecutive titles from 2010-12 in both the indoor 400-meter and outdoor 400-meter hurdles, and won the outdoor 400-meter title in 2010 and 2011 and the outdoor 110-meter hurdles in 2012.

Mike Bernstein, Army West Point (1992-95) – Bernstein was named the Patriot League Indoor Athlete of the Meet as a senior in 1995, then went on to win All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championship with a 10th-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. All four of his individual titles at the Patriot League Championships also came in his senior season as he claimed the mile and 3,000-meter run in the indoor season and won the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter in the outdoor season.

He also won five individual titles at Patriot League championships in the 800-meter, with three in the indoor competition and two in the outdoor season.

Brian Gebhardt, Army West Point (1997-00) – Gebhardt was dominant in throwing events, winning the hammer at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship as a junior and senior and doing the same in the weight throw at the Indoor Championship. Powell earned titles on the track and in jumping events, as he was a two-time Patriot League outdoor champion in the 100-meter in 2002-03 and also won the outdoor 200-meter in 2002 while also claiming both the indoor and outdoor long jump titles in 2002 and again in 2003.

Tyrone Russell, Colgate (2000-03) – Russell excelled in competition at Patriot League championships with three Athlete of the Meet awards and nine individual League titles in his career. He won the Patriot League Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet award in both 2002 and 2003, and added an Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet honor in his final season. All of Russell's individual titles came in the 200-meter and 400-meter, as he won the former twice in both the indoor and outdoor championships and the latter three times in the outdoor season and twice in the indoor competition.

Clay Schwabe, Army West Point (1998-01) – Schwabe's standout career was highlighted by a memorable senior season in 2001 when he was named Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet at both the indoor and outdoor championship and went on to earn All-America status at the NCAA Outdoor Championship with an eighth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Schwabe also won Patriot League individual titles that season in the indoor 1,000-meter run and outdoor 800-meter and 1,500-meter run, which he repeated in after also winning as a junior.

Jay Stell, Navy (2013-present) – Stell heads into his senior season with an already impressive run of accomplishments in the javelin. He has won the event at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship in all three of his seasons, and placed third at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in 2014 to match the highest NCAA finish for any Patriot Leaguer in the outdoor competition and earn All-America honors.

Jason Stewart, Army West Point (1991-94) – Stewart earned a pair of All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run his senior season with impressive showings, coming in third place at the NCAA Outdoor Championship and fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championship. The Patriot League All-Decade Team member won three individual titles at the League Championships, including back-to-back in the outdoor 1,500-meter run in 1992 and 1993.

Domonick Sylve, Army West Point (2008-11) – Sylve concluded his career by placing 11th in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championship to earn All-America status. He was also a two-time Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet, earning the honor in the outdoor season in 2009 and in indoor competition in 2011. Sylve won seven titles at Patriot League championships, winning the 110-meter hurdles in the outdoor season all four of his years and also claiming a pair of 60-meter hurdle titles in indoor competition.

Jeff Weaver, Army West Point (2001-04) – Weaver is perhaps the most accomplished competitor at the Patriot League championships as a four-time Athlete of the Meet and a 10-time event winner. He earned the Field Athlete of the Meet at the indoor competition in three straight seasons from 2002-04, then concluded his career as the Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet in 2004. Weaver excelled in the triple jump as a three-time winner at the indoor championship and two-time in the outdoor event, and also won the high jump twice in the outdoor season and once in indoor and the long jump once at both events. Weaver won five of his 10 titles as a senior in 2004.
