Army Football Top Moments: Number 1
December 09, 2015 | Football, Athletics
WEST POINT, N.Y. - In celebration of 125 years of Army football, the Army Athletic Association counted down the top 10 moments in program history each Wednesday throughout the 2015 football season. A fan vote and a panel of athletic department officials combined to determine the list of top moments.
Number 1: Army's Three Straight National Championships (1944, 1945, 1946)
From 1944 to 1946, the Army football team was undefeated with a record of 27-0-1 and won three consecutive National Championships under legendary head coach Earl 'Red' Blaik.
In 1944, the Black Knights were a dominating force. Army averaged 56 points per game and outscored its opponents 504-35. Glenn Davis set an NCAA record, which still stand today, by averaging 11.5 yards per carry, and won the Maxwell Award. Army went 9-0, including a 59-0 shutout of Notre Dame and a 23-7 victory over Navy.
The next year, Army was perfect again. Felix 'Doc' Blanchard led the charge and scored 17 touchdowns to become Army's first Heisman Trophy winner. The Black Knights were a force statistically and averaged 47, while giving up five points per game. Another shutout win over Notre Dame and a 32-13 victory in the Army-Navy game punctuated the perfect season.
In 1946, Army was still dominant and was led by Glenn Davis, who scored 13 touchdowns en route to becoming Army's second straight Heisman Winner. The Black Knights won their first eight games, including victories at No. 4 Michigan, and against nationally-ranked Duke. On November 9, Army faced off against No. 2 Notre Dame, in what would be called the game of the century. The teams stood toe-to-toe for 60 minutes, with the Fighting Irish's Johnny Lujack making a game-saving tackle on Doc Blanchard to preserve a scoreless tie. Army went on to defeat Penn and Navy, and finished 9-0-1 for its third straight national title.Â
