Volleyball Sweeps Navy at Alumni Hall

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point volleyball team swept service academy rival Navy Friday night at Alumni Hall. The Black Knights defeated the Mids 3-0 with set scores of 25-23, 27-25 and 25-23. The Cadets improved to 19-7 overall and 11-2 in the Patriot League. Â
"I am proud of the team for staying mentally tough when we needed to stay tough," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "There was strong volleyball on both sides, but all matches between Army and Navy are. I am so proud of the team for staying patient and believing in themselves until the very end. As coaches we believe in them. The theme we chose for today was to finish the games and we did. I am incredibly proud of this special group of young ladies."

Olivia Fairfield led the Black Knights with 11 kills on 29 attempts. Carolyn Bockrath recorded 10 kills and was followed by Vanessa Wesley who had eight. Nicole Perri and Jaden Pickell contributed four kills apiece in the victory with Perri also adding a team-high three service aces. Vanessa Edwards had 36 assists for Army and 11 digs, while Shannel Chong recorded 16 digs.

The Midshipmen came out strong in the first set, but the Black Knights kept their wits to earn a win in the first game. After trailing for the first half of the set, a service ace by Perri tied up the score at 16-16. Clay tallied a kill right before a block by Wesley cued a Navy timeout with the score at 18-16 in favor of Army.

Fairfield earned a kill, but the Mids went on a 3-0 run to retie the score at 19-all. The teams traded points to bring the score to 20-20 before Army went on a 5-2 run to claim the set. Bockrath recorded three kills in the stretch with Fairfield tallying a service ace. The set was won on an attacking error by the Midshipmen.

In set two, Navy led 19-14, but the Black Knights pushed the set past 25 to win 27-25. The Black Knights tied the score at 21-all with a kill by Fairfield. The Mids took a 23-21 lead after an attacking error by Army and a kill of their own.

Bockrath earned a kill before Edwards was assisted by Pickell to bring the score to 24-24. Navy pulled ahead to 25-24, but Pickell and Bockrath earned kills to secure the set 27-25.

The Black Knights came back to defeat the Midshipmen 25-23 in the third set to clinch the match. Army held an 11-4 advantage in blocks and 41-22 lead in kills over Navy.

The Cadets will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 6, for a 5 p.m. match in Easton, Pa., against Lafayette.

Lafayette resides at 11-12 overall and 3-9 in conference play. The Leopards fell to Army, 3-0, at West Point earlier this season. The Black Knights dominated in every statistical category and held a 59-23 advantage in points, 44-20 lead in kills, 43-19 edge in assists and recorded an 11-1 ratio in blocks.
