Army Football Top Moments: Number 6
November 04, 2015 | Football, Athletics
WEST POINT, N.Y. - In celebration of 125 years of Army football, the Army Athletic Association is counting down the top 10 moments in program history each Wednesday during the remainder of the 2015 football season. A fan vote and a panel of athletic department officials combined to determine the list of top moments.
Number 6 – Mike Mayweather sets Academy season and career rushing marks (1990)
No Black Knight has ever carried the ball as far as Mike Mayweather.
Mayweather was a perfect fit for head coach Jim Young's triple option offense. His combination of speed and power enabled him to dominate opposing defenses.
Mayweather is the only Army player to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in three separate seasons and he set the Academy career rushing mark, previously held by the legendary Glen Davis, in the final game of his junior season.
Mayweather saved his best for his senior year in 1990. He amassed a then-Academy record 1,338 yards on the ground, breaking the single-season mark he had set the year before. For his efforts, Mayweather was named a First Team All-American, and finished 10t in the Heisman Trophy balloting.
Mayweather surpassed 100 yards in eight different games in 1990, an Academy record, and capped his career with 4,299 yards and a victory over Navy in his final collegiate game.
