Wrestling Goes 1-2 at Northeast Duals
November 15, 2015 | Wrestling
TROY, N.Y. – The Army West Point wrestling team was able to sweep LIU-Post 44-0, including seven-consecutive bonus point wins to end the meet, but fell to No. 12 N.C. State 32-6 and No. 20 Oklahoma 34-6 at the Journeyman Northeast Duals on Sunday.
"If you are going to wrestle teams more talented than you, then you need to be tougher than them," said head coach Kevin Ward. "We were not tough enough today."
The Black Knights were led by their three NCAA Qualifiers from 2014 as seniors Brian Harvey and Bryce Barnes, as well as junior Russell Parsons Jr. all won two of their three bouts today and each earned a bonus point victory. Additionally, junior Logan Everett also posted a 2-1 record in 141-pound action.
The day started against the Wolfpack, who were able to jump out to a 23-0 lead through the first six matches. Harvey broke that trend in the 174-pound match with a 7-2 decision over Nicky Hall and had No. 19 Barnes add a 5-3 decision to Army's scoring total.
The Black Knights had their hands full with nearly half of the squad from Raleigh, N.C., being ranked in the top-20 at their weight class. Everett took to the mat against Kevin Jack and held the third-ranked 141-pounder to just three points with a 9-2 decision while No. 18 Parsons Jr. faced off against ninth-ranked Tommy Gantt and dropped a major decision, 14-4 and David Farr lost by a 17-2 technical fall at the hands of the top-ranked heavyweight, Nick Gwiazdowski.
The Cadets took their frustrations out on LIU-Post with seven of the ten decisions coming by bonus-point victories. After a 9-3 decision from Sean Badua over Joe Paterno gave Army its first win over Paterno outside the realm of football, a 4-2 decision from freshman Austin Harry and an 11-4 decision from Everett gave the Black Knights an early 9-0 advantage.
From there, an 11-3 major decision from Mark Marchetti was followed by technical falls from Parsons Jr. and Andrew Mendel before Harvey pinned James Sinclair 1:17 into period 2 to seal the victory. The meet ended with a trio of technical fall victories from Tyler McLees, Barnes and Smith.
"We did some good things today, but what I took away from this was that we have to get tougher," said Ward. "Some guys' spots are up for grabs, and we need to take more pride in how we fight during a wrestling match."
Army looked to conclude the day's action above .500 with 20th-ranked Oklahoma remaining, but a pair of early technical falls, including one against the team's second top-ranked opponent of the day, would put the team behind schedule. Everett earned his second decision of the day with an 11-4 win over Trae Blackwell, bringing the score to 10-3 after the first three matches. Parsons Jr. scored the second and final decision of the meet for the Black Knights with an 8-1 victory over Brock Wingbermuehle, bringing the deficit to 16-6 with half the meet to go.
The Black Knights will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 22, for the New York State Championships hosted by Cornell in Ithaca.
