Wesley Garners PL Athlete of the Week Accolades
October 19, 2015 | Volleyball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After leading the Army West Point volleyball team in a pair of sweeps last weekend, Vanessa Wesley has been tabbed the Patriot League Athlete of the Week, it was announced by the conference Monday.
"We are very proud of Vanessa Wesley," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "She works hard and has improved a lot this season. What is impressive about Vanessa is that she is a great student of the game. She can tell you exactly what the opponent is trying to achieve and has started to own the net and that includes both attacking and blocking. Vanessa picks up information quickly and is very coachable. Her work ethic is outstanding. If she continues to work like she is now, the sky is the limit for her."
The middle blocker led the Black Knights in kills and blocks against Patriot League foes Lehigh and Bucknell this past weekend. Wesley tallied 13 kills against the Mountain Hawks to average 4.33 per set. She also added two solo and one assisted block.
Opposite the Bison, the Phoenix, Ariz., native, recorded 14 kills, seven of which came in the first set. Wesley's hitting percentage was.500 with only three errors.
Overall, Wesley earned 27 kills in the two matches averaging 4.50 kills per set and a .477 hitting percentage.
She ranks second in the league with her .427 hitting percentage this season on 232 total kills and 3.22 kills per set.
The Black Knights are on a five-match winning streak and in those five games have only given up two sets. Army boasts an overall record of 15-6 and is 7-1 in the league.
The Cadets will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Holy Cross for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Crusaders.
