Men’s Cross Country Suffers Setback Against Navy
October 16, 2015 | Men's Cross Country
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's cross country team fell behind early and was unable to catch up as it fell to service academy rival Navy 15-50 at the West Point Golf Course on Friday afternoon.
The Midshipmen's top-five runners approached the finish line simultaneously and ended up being separated by just 0.89 seconds.
"We were beaten by a better team," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "Our guys ran as well as they could, and have ran at the level they ran today throughout year. If you're going to win in this sport, you have got to have people competing at the same level throughout the year; you can't just turn it on one time. The future is going to be brighter for us as we continue to bring in more young people that can help us get better. The guys on our team are resilient and will bounce back from this and continue to compete the rest of the year."
The Black Knights only runner in the top-10 was senior captain Tom Girardot who finished the 8K course in 25:39.92. He was directly followed by sophomore Johnny Valeri, who crossed the finish line at 25:40.16, and fellow senior Drew Beck, who completed the race in 25:44.82.
Army's other two scorers were sophomore Nick Causey and junior Jacob Fong. Causey finished 15th with a time of 25:54.14 and Fong was 16th with a time of 25:29.00.
Army will be back in action in two weeks on Saturday, Oct. 31, at noon for the Patriot League Championships hosted by Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
