WEST POINT, N.Y. – Volleyball senior Vanessa Edwards and men's soccer senior Cody Guerry were recognized as co-Army Athletic Association Athletes of the Week this week. The Athlete of the Week honor is the first for both Edwards and Guerry.
Â
Edwards helped lead the volleyball team to a 2-0 record last week, including a "Star" victory over Navy, while Guerry, who was also honored as Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, guided the men's soccer team to a 1-0-1 record and finished the week with three goals.
Â
Edwards helped the volleyball team earn a pair of wins last week to include a 3-0 victory over Lafayette and a 3-2 decision over service academy rival Navy. Edwards recorded two double-double performances after recording 81 assists and 29 digs.
Â
Edwards eclipsed the 2,000 career assist milestone opposite the Midshipmen and joins just six others in program history who bear that distinction. She now totals 2,007 career assists which ranks her seventh in the Army record books. Against Navy, the senior setter tallied 9.4 assists per set and 2.2 digs per set to pace the Black Knights.
Â
The Sacramento, Calif., native, leads the conference in assists per set on the season with an average of 10.17, which is 0.52 assists per set higher than the next best finisher.
Â
Volleyball (13-6, 5-1 Patriot League) is back in action with a pair of home matches this week, as the Black Knights host Lehigh on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. before welcoming Bucknell on Saturday, Oct. 17 for a 6 p.m. match.
Â
Guerry netted a first-half goal in Army's 1-1 draw at Holy Cross on Oct. 7 for his first marker of the season. A native of Garland, Texas, Guerry registered two more tallies during a 3-2 win over Lehigh on Oct. 11 for his first career multi-goal performance.
Â
Guerry scored in the 57th minute against Lehigh to give Army a 2-1 lead after junior Nick Williams found the back of the net in the 54th minute for the game-tying goal. The Mountain Hawks scored to knot the game up at 2-2 in the 88th minute, but Guerry answered just 20 seconds later, burying a cross from junior Trase Stapley in the 89th minute to give the Black Knights a 3-2 advantage with 1:56 remaining in regulation.
Â
Guerry has three goals and one assist through 10 matches this season. His three goals and seven points on the year are already his best output for a single season.
Â
Men's soccer (3-4-3, 1-1-1 Patriot League) returns to Clinton Field on Saturday, Oct. 17 to host American at 7 p.m.
